About & Mission

DataChan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building PRECIT, a free, crowd-verified retail price app for everyday shoppers.

Our mission

The mission of DataChan is to:

  • Enable customers to be more mindful during the product purchase process through technology
  • Bring awareness to product prices to the general purchasing public
  • Make visible the effects of product pricing on people and businesses

Why we’re a nonprofit, together

DataChan is founded as a not-for-profit because we are all consumers, and so that we as consumers can help ourselves and each other together. Together we can:

  • Become more aware of price changes of what we routinely purchase
  • See prices others have scanned so that you can find the real lowest prices
  • Help others in finding the lowest prices for what they’re shopping for
  • Be the balancing force against large corporations and their pricing tactics

Therefore:

  • There will be no ads
  • We won’t sell your personal data
  • And we need your help!

Our chartered purpose

Our nonprofit bylaws state exactly why DataChan exists:

To enable consumers to be more mindful during the routine product purchase process through technology, bring awareness to product prices for the general purchasing public, and make visible the effects of product pricing on people and businesses.

Why is DataChan a nonprofit?

Retailers and ad-funded apps profit when pricing stays confusing. DataChan doesn’t. We’re an independent 501(c)(3) building open, crowd-verified price data as a public resource — not a product to sell to advertisers or retailers.

  • No ads. Nothing on PRECIT is sponsored placement.
  • Data never sold. Your scans build a shared public record — they’re not a product.
  • Open verification. Every price is backed by independent, agreeing scans — not a single company’s say-so.

Where we are today

PRECIT is still in active development. We’re piloting shelf-label scanning with a small group of participating retailers, refining our on-device detection and our crowd-verification model before opening things up more broadly. Email us if you’d like to hear about early access.
